Jan I Sadeler: Original Etching, Sea
Original etching by Jan I Sadeler (Brussels, 1550 - Venice, 1600), depicting a seascape. 18x23 cm (entire sheet, trimmed margins). The etching features the signature on the plate in the lower left: "T. B. Amst. ivet. / Joa. Sadeler Sculps:" (from Theodor Bernard of Amsterdam). It contains a didactic inscription engraved at the bottom: "Quem penes arbitrium vas ti manet aequoris omne Per tua, Neptune à´, regna tridente potens De facilem ratisbusqz viam facilesqz recursus Hanc Deus humanis adijce rebus opem". Datable to Frankfurt, 1587, from the work of Dirck Barendsz.
